How the year, month, day, and hour pillars form the basic structure commonly called BaZi or the Eight Characters.
The four pillars correspond to year, month, day, and hour. Together they create eight characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch per pillar. Traditional interpretations examine relationships among these symbols rather than treating the birth-year animal as the whole chart.
